Factitious & Related Disorders Center

Factitious disorders occur when a person intentionally induces or fakes symptoms in order to elicit sympathy and attention from others. The most well-known are Munchausen syndrome and Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSBP). In the former, people induce symptoms in themselves. In MSBP, people exaggerate or fake the symptoms of others in their care, usually children.
