Autoimmune Basics Center

Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system reacts against the body’s own cells. Normally the immune system defends against antigens, such as foreign bodies or viruses. The system malfunctions in autoimmune conditions and mistakes tissues for antigens and attacks them. Autoimmune diseases include type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis.
